On one of the missions I failed to complete a few entries ago I had to “waste the wife” of a guy who apparently had some qualms with her. When I first tried the mission I failed a few minutes into trying. This time I realized how much I had to do in order to pass the mission. I had to follow Mrs. Dawson from the mall and make it look like she got into a car accident. I did exactly that and it took a good ten minutes for me to finally make her car blow up but right after it blew up it said I failed the mission because I was too close to the scene of the accident. The funniest part of this game apart from the hookers and the cheesy radio stations is how I can get away with anything. I rammed this woman into a wall in front of 10 ten people one which was a cop and only when I’m driving away do they say I was caught. Needless to say, I tried the mission AGAIN and completed it. |

To begin the game I went to Starfish Island which is an island in Miami I’m quite familiar with. It is where are the celebrities live: Will Smith, Gloria Estefan, Jennifer Lopez, Ricky Martin. It’s beautiful and has only mansions (of course!). So the mission that was given to me was from an angry little man who said he wanted me to kill the guy who stole his money, but before I kill him I have to follow him and see where he stashed the money he stole. So I end up at this apartment building and look through the window (as indicated) and next thing I know I’m chasing after this guy who is shooting at me while running on the roof. One thing I’ve noticed through out playing GTA is that it gets progressively harder. At first I thought this game was cake, but I definitely spoke too soon. It took me about four tries to complete the mission. I fell off the rook once. Cops chased me down and shot me another time. I finally followed the guy all the way to Prawn Island and completed the mission. I got a measly $1,000 for dieing 3 times! |

The last two times I played I failed a very difficult mission. This time I decided to try another mission. I went to a payphone and was told to kill Mrs. Dawson. The name of the mission was “Wste the Wife”—quite ingenious. She leaves the mall in a Porsche and I’m supposed to kill her by making it look like a car accident. I stupidly enough thought this mission would be easy. I was driving one of the worst cars in the game and I couldn’t catch up with her. It began to rain heavily making me swerve whenever I turned. Eventually she got away and I once again failed another mission. I began the “business transaction” mission for the third time. This time, to make it even more difficult, I had stars which mean the police are after me. I stole one of the cop cars and when I got out was shot down by them. I failed he mission for the third time. The fourth time around I noticed that better cars are actually better in the game. For example, if I drive a Ferrari compared to a Manana I’ll get to the location faster and have sharper turns. Anyway, I failed the mission again. Fifth time was the charm, though. I finally killed all the Cubans and then told to chase after one of them to get the briefcase. After running him off the road in a moped, killing him and returning the briefcase, I finally completed the mission and was given $1,000. |

In one of my past entries I wrote that this game reminds me of the Miami I live in today. Though Grand Theft Auto’s depiction of Miami is one of Vice City and Scarface its basic foundation is similar to that of today’s Miami Beach. The hotels are exactly the same—neon lights and all. Every time I drive down Ocean Avenue I think of home. The only visible difference is the amount of people. At any time day or night in Miami Beach it is crowded with thousands of people and in Grand Theft Auto there are very few people walking around. The last time I played I failed the mission having to do with Diaz and the “business transaction”. I went back to Cortez and began the mission for the second time. One thing I hadn’t noticed the first time around was when I got to the vantage point in order to get a better shot I read the caption which stated: “The Cubans are coming.” I thought that was hilarious because I myself am Cuban and the ones that disrupt the “transaction” are the Cubans which I have to kill. The last time I tried to do this mission Diaz was killed by one of the Cubans. This time around was no different. So after everyone was dead, including Diaz, I drove to the hotel in order to save the game. I drove a car called the Cuban Hermes which was playing Cuban music—this game reminds me so much of home… except for the whole drug dealing and killing. |

Though I hadn’t played in a while I was pleasantly surprised to find that I am getting really use to the controller. I use to play video games all the time (the efforts of a little sister trying to be like her big brother), but my forte was certainly not anything to do with racing cars or driving. So as soon as started playing for the sixth time I actually maneuvered quite well. I went to Cortez’s boat to begin a new mission. I was told I had to assist in a “business transaction”, but first I had to pick up some firepower to use in the mission. I was a bit confused with the location. It was an arrow on the map and I forgot that that meant I had to go up. This game has been pretty difficult because I am unfamiliar with it. I didn’t read any manual or getting any tips as to how to go about playing it so at times I’ve felt like a mouse in a maze. Luckily, my guesses have gotten me to where I need to be, but the game hasn’t been as fun as I initially assumed. I’m more concerned with trying to figure out how to play it then actually enjoying it. So I picked up Lance and he informed me that we had to drop off and watch over Diaz when he does the “transaction”. Once we arrived at the location I was told to get to a vantage point on top of the roof. The deal, as I expected, went bad. All of a sudden I see shots coming from every angle. Because I was on the roof I wasn’t sure how to position myself in order to shoot at anyone. I failed the mission because Diaz died. |

I went back to my last entry and remembered where I left off. I guess you have to look to the past to to see where you're going. So I went back down and found the entrance of the mall in order to find the courier. I stayed on the bike and went up the escalator . I began to talk to the courier who was located in front of the escalator. He started saying something in a French accent about the rain being wet this year. Suddenly Feds began shooting at us and the courier informed me that they had followed me there. The courier ran away and I was instructed to chase him and get the chips. The courier got on a bike so I found a Harley Davidson so chase him in. The Harley, however, was extremely hard to maneuver and I had very little ‘health’ left. I fell off the bike for what felt like the tenth time and began to get into a car to continue chasing the courier when the screen flashed “Mission Failed”. Throughout the mission I did notice that whenever I get into a certain kind of car more of that car begin to appear, the same applies to motorcycles. So anyway I returned to the boat to begin the mission again more stupidities occurred however. I was walking out when I fell into the water once again. This time when I walked out of the hospital there was a taxi waiting for me. I returned to the boat and began the mission AGAIN! I got guns before, of course, and met up with the courier. This time I noticed there was a bike parked outside the mall which I assume was placed there for me to use when I chase down the courier. The same thing happens--French courier, Feds, chase. This time I opted for the car and ran the courier off the road. I killed him and got the chips right in front of the cops who were also shooting at me. The mission was finally complete when I brought the chips to the colonel. I accomplished the mission and received $500. This was all very repititious because I couldn't get the hang of it. I felt like I was going in circles and I'd never get through the mission. |

I began the game on a bad note because of stupidities I fell into the water and just as I suspected I died. When I fell in it said “wasted” which I found interesting. Next thing I know I am outside the hospital. The instructions/notes in the corner inform me that I have lost all my weapons and the doctors have taken some of my cash. I feel like I have no control sometimes, even though I have a controller and I am supposedly the one playing the game I feel as though the game is playing me sometimes. I get back into a car and I thought I saw another ‘floating heart’ on the second story of a building, but when I got there I realized it was a red and white pill. After I walked through it everything got very slow, the character moved in slow motion. I assume the pill was a drug because it also took points from my ‘health’. When I got back into the car one of my favorite songs came on--”I just died in your arms tonight”. I never recognized any songs any other time I played so it was a pleasant surprise. I went back to the boat and was given another mission. I had to meet the courier at the mall so he could give me the chips. Before I went to the mall I went to Ammu-Nation since I had no weapons. I hadn’t realized this prior to purchasing the guns but it displays how much money I have in the upper gith corner. I had $2350 to at the time but then I purchased 2 Macs for $300 a piece. When I mounted the bike I found that I could use the gun while riding. So I was back to the mission. I had to travel toward a yellow triangle. The instructions told me that the yellow triangle meant the courier was on a second floor. After I read that for some reason I decided to go up the parking lot. Though the parking lot route was a bust I did find a shotgun. I was a sick of looking for the courier so I just saved the game. |

So once again I was a bit disoriented when I began in the game in an office wearing overalls, but then I remembered last time I played I had to “fit in” hence the attire. Everytime I jump back into the game I think as though it's a labyrinth of sorts and I'm taking yet another path completely unaware of my destination. I used a bike in order to travel and fell off only a few seconds after mounting it since I haven’t played in a while. What I’ve come to notice is that when you fall off a bike you loose ‘health’. Your total amount of ‘health’ as the player is determined by points--100 points is perfect health and you die, obviously, when you reach 0. I mounted the bike and began to ride but I wasn’t exactly sure where to go considering I had no idea what the last thing I did last time I played was. I kept on spinning out and falling off the bike because it was raining so it wasn’t as easy to turn corners sharply. I went to the pier and when I reached the boat I was told that the person responsible for messing up the drug deal was a man by the name of Gonzalez. My next mission entailed that I kill him with, of all things, a chainsaw. I found a ‘floating heart’ which restores all my ‘health’ back and continued on my mission. I almost fell into the water which I assume is not something I should do--I don’t think this guy can swim. So I get to Gonzalez but he runs away and the cops begin chasing me. The instructions tell me to go to the Spray n’ Paint so I can change the appearance of the car. To change the appearance of the bike it costs $100 but it was my first time so I got it for free. Once I do that I got new clothes that were supposedly delivered for me at the mall and got rid of the overalls. |

At the end of the last game I beat up a group of chefs and stole one of their cell phones. I heard the cell phone ringing once I started the new game but was unsure how to pick it up. I’m still trying to get use to the controller. When driving a car to the lawyer’s building to get my next assignment. I saw some landmarks I am familiar with because I live in Miami, where the game is set. The lawyer told me I had to go scare the members of the jury without killing them. I wasn’t entirely sure what that meant until I reached the juror’s car and a sign flashed that said I had to destroy their car. I used the moped when is slow and I got stuck in the alleyways because I thought I would be able to weave in and out of the buildings. One job was especially pointless and I didn’t understand it: I had to kill the pizza delivery man before he delivered the pizza. I got $500 for it, though. The hardest mission I’ve come across in the entire game was to start a riot among construction workers and then blew up the construction trucks. The workers chased me and I was on the brink of death but I changed my weapon to a gun and shot them. To destroy the vans was also difficult. |

The game began with a narration to set the scene. A drug deal went awry and it is my job as the character Tom to get the money and drugs back and figure out who blighted the drug deal. My first mission was to get a pink slip and then to see the lawyer, but it was difficult to look at the map (which is located in the top left corner), dodge cops, and drive to the indicated area. I am given missions and receive money when I have succeeded. I had played the game once before so I was familiar with the controller. I found it easy to get in and out of the cars. As easy as it is to get in and out of cars, I didn’t steal a car without consequences. For half of the game I was chased by cops and consistently shot at for stealing the cars and beating up people that I had to (i.e. the chef whom I had to kill). Some of the missions were uneventful (i.e. get new clothes at Rafael’s), but overall pretty easy. |
